For many years, advocates around the world have been working to develop and move forward a treaty on the rights of persons with disabilities. In 2006 this treaty emerged from the United Nations and countries around the world can now ratify the document. This treaty promises to have far reaching impact on the rights of people with disabilities once in effect.

RatifyNow was founded by lifelong disability rights advocates who worked with other advocates at the United Nations to produce the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Membership is comprised of individuals and organizations who are passionate about using the CRPD to protect and advance the rights of people with disabilities worldwide. The site offers a wealth of information about the CRPD and offers suggestions that visitors can use to encourage their government to ratify the treaty.

Michele Magar, long-time disability rights advocate and journalist is my guest on this episode of DisabilityNation. Magar is actively involved with the efforts of RatifyNow and has been involved extensively in moving the CRPD forward. Michele shares her insights on the treaty, its importance, and lets us know how we can work with governments around the world to gain full implementation of the CRPD.
